A flight over the keys

A resounding recommendation for classical piano music was given by pianist David Theodor Schmidt (Erlangen) at the Kolpinghaus in Neunkirchen. Initially he performed Prelude & Fugue in B flat Minor by Johann Sebastian Bach and the piano sonata op. 2 No. 3 by Ludwig van Beethoven. Another highlight was Prelude & Fugue in D Minor by Dmitri Shostakovich after the break. The crowning culmination of the concert, however, was the final piece, Franz Liszt’s Variations on a motif by Bach “Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen” which was a truly great pleasure to hear. The performer showed the virtuosity of his playing emphasised through his rhythmic distinctions and thereby created a marvellous atmosphere. He was celebrated by the long and heartfelt applause of the huge audience... and played two encores...
