Concert Reviews

Molwa (Russia) | 5 April 2005

Schmidt performed in concerts in Vladimir and Moscow

The second meeting with the talented pianist David Theodor Schmidt from Erlangen (Germany) gave us the greatest pleasure. We had heard his playing two years ago for the first time. During his tour now, Schmidt played in the “Hall of the Classical Music” the piano concerto by Schumann with the State Symphony Orchestra conducted by Artyom Markin.

Judging from the music he plays, David is not afraid of difficulties on his creative way. Schumann’s romantic piano concerto sounded deep and thoughtful in the sold-out hall. The artist wonderfully managed to show the conception of the composition. In spite of some constraint in the performance of the first movement of the concerto, the cadenza was played brilliantly and masterly. The second movement of the concerto sounded fascinating and with humour and in the third movement David showed his high pianistic culture, his maturity, his brilliant technique and his variety of pianistic ways of expression.

This time, Schmidt also gave a solo recital in Moscow which was arranged by the Regional Music Society. The concert took place in the Moscow State Conservatoire “P. I. Tchaikovsky”. Playing there is not only the dream of each musician from Russia but also of performers from all over the world. With deep emotionality and inspiration he played there the A major sonata op. 101 by Beethoven and “Prelude, Choral et Fugue” by C. Franck and – after roaring applause – as encores two pieces by J.S. Bach in transcriptions by Busoni and M. Hess. The reaction of a member of the audience, the professor of piano at the Moscow State Conservatoire and Artist of the people of Russia Tatyana Rubina, serves as a bright confirmation of Schmidt’s successful performance in Moscow. She wrote:”With pleasure, I have listened to the solo recital of David Theodor Schmidt. I want to emphasize the bright individuality of this musician who has, in spite of his youth, already a truly original musical personality. His careful attitude to the sound and his splendid observation and comprehension of each phrase draws the listeners into the music and lets us hope for further meetings.”
